This created an obvious difference between in fertility rate between the regions. The only exceptions for those living in the urban areas were if the first child is born with a disability or if the couple worked in life-endangering occupations such as mining (Hesketh and Xing, 1171-1176). The government also introduced different economic and social incentives so that the population complies with it in the effort of a successful implementation. Economic incentives included taxes and fines for those who went against the policy. Social incentives for those that complied with the policy included the grant to preferred access to healthcare, housing and education. (Festini de Martino, 358-360) Effects of the Policy The introduction of the policy has had both positive and negative impacts. One of the major effects of the policy was the prevention of closer to 250 to 300 million births. There was also a reduction in the total fertility rate between 1980 and 2011 from 2.7 children per woman to 1.7 (World Bank). This scale down of total fertility rate led to the reduction of the total population of the country. In the end, the country avoided the population explosion they feared, improved the living standards and maintained steady economic growth. However, the population growth mitigation created concerns of the future demographic situation of the country. The total fertility rate was heading below the replacement level of 2.1, and there were worries that later or sooner the country would have a growing prospect of an aging population and have a small working age population. In the long term, there would be a shift in the dependency ratio and the government would be under immense pressure to provide the social and economic support to the elderly population. The policy also contributed significantly to the reduction of mortality rate since women had fewer pregnancies and births (World Health Organisation, UNICEF, UNFPA, and The World Bank). Nevertheless, this came at the cost of deprivation of choice for family size and contraceptive use. Women were without formal consent inserted intrauterine devices post-partum in rural China. They had to seek permission for removal to conceive a second baby. Over-zealous officials also took it upon themselves to order forced abortions and sterilizations on most women whose pregnancies were unapproved under the policy. However, such cases only occurred during the early years after the policy had been implemented and became rare as the years progressed (Wang and Mason, 141–54). Before the implementation of the policy, there was a growing traditional preference for sons and Chinese parents invested more in them than in their daughters. After the implementation, there were no significant differences between single-boy and single-girl families regarding access to education and health outcomes. This was an acceleration movement towards gender equality in China. There were also growing concerns to the degree to which the policy has contributed to an extremely skewed sex ratio at birth and the â€Å"missing girls† phenomenon. The number of male births significantly rose after the introduction of the policy. The most common cause for such an imbalance was selective abortions, where unborn females were aborted more than the unborn males. Although the determination of the sex of the unborn baby through ultrasound was illegal, many couples still carried out the scans illegally to find the sex. They carried an abortion if it was a girl and tried to conceive a son. There has also been considerable debate on the policy’s effects on the well-being of children. Characteristics such as being spoiled, selfish, unsociable and obese have been associated with parents overindulgence with the only-child. One way to look at this institutional racism is to examine at the United States prison system and the gap of incarceration rates among African Americans, Hispanics, and White males. According to a research by Prison Policy Initiative both African Americans and Hispanics are imprisoned at 5.1 times and 1.8 times higher than the rate of White Americans for every 100,000 incarcerations, respectively. Throughout the history of the United States, it is obvious that the reasons for the disparity of the incarceration rate are related to policies, irregularities, and implicit prejudices. Families and children of the incarcerated are adversely affected due to the discrimination. However, many white Americans don’t see how racism affects incarceration rates and they would argue that the economic situation and past arrest patterns are res ponsible for the sustainable increase in the incarceration rate for African Americans and Hispanics. It takes place in a world in which anything, from ordering a pizza to retrieving records from half-way across the planet, can be accomplished through the vast and complicated map of phone lines and computers known as the Internet; a world in which, with the right knowledge and the right program, a good cracker can log into remote computers and alter any information they choose: flight plans, medical and criminal records, top secret government information, even someone's identity. Angela Bennett, is an introverted top system analyst at Cathedral Systems. She sits at her keyboard, doing all her work by phone and modem. When she needs to eat, she uses the Internet to order a pizza. As a well-paid freelancer, she spends her days working out of her home finding flaws in and debugging new programs sent to her on disc by her employer, or tracking down viruses hacked into unsuspecting systems. At nights she is "chatting" with other friends from the cyberspace on the 'Net'. She's quite happy with her somewhat lonely routine, until the very life she's made for herself, her whole life, in fact is snatched away from her with the stroke of a single key. This pushes her headlong into the middle of a murderous web of corruption and conspiracy. The only time Angela gets out of the house is when she goes on a vacation to Mexico, and even then, she has her laptop with her. However, right before heading south of the border, Angela comes into possession of a disk containing information vital to the successful criminal activity of a group of cyber-bad guys, the Praetorians. They know she has it, and will stop at nothing to get it back. Angela discovers secret information on the disk she has received only hours before she leaves for vacation. While relaxing on a Mexican beach, Angela meets a dashing fellow hacker with the style and charisma of James Bond. Unfortunately for Angela, he also has a gun, which he plans to use on her.

Ethics and Fears and Wonders of Human Cloning

What is a clone? According to the Encyclop?dia Britannica (1979), â€Å"a clone is a population of organisms derived originally from a single individual. By definition clones occur only in organisms capable of asexual reproduction and consist of genetically identical individuals†. There has been a successful recorded experiment which regard to cloning, although it was just an animal (a sheep to be more specific), there has been speculations that Human Cloning is not very far away.Before judging this issue, we should refrain having ignorant thoughts and try to study and understand the issue and detach ourselves from our emotions, religious dogmas and cultural habits/ or entrenched habits. We should see all the possible outcome of this, both positive and negative. Cloning is an issue that cannot be overlooked because everyone will be affected by the decision that would be put upon the issue, lives will either be saved and/or lost. In February 1997, Dolly the sheep, was successfu lly cloned from an adult sheep.After this experiment, some people were enthusiastic with this successful discovery, because it may be the key to unlocking the ‘untreatable diseases’ that we are currently facing today. It may give life and/or prolong life, it may be the only solution and the only hope for families that are experiencing a very difficult time in watching their loved ones suffer, and it may be the only guarantee that the human race will not die out in an incurable disease. The author has laid out cases that are suggesting that Human Cloning is needed; I think that some of the cases were purely for the good of the people/masses while some are extremely selfish.When I stated â€Å"good for the people/masses† I meant it in the terms of being egocentric. Being an egocentric, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is â€Å"concerned with the individual rather than society†. Wanting Human Cloning for your own sake but at the same time others wo uld also benefit from it (without real intention) shows egocentrism. On the other hand, I also stated that its â€Å"selfish†. What is being selfish? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary selfish is an â€Å"arising from concern with one's own welfare or advantage in disregard of others†.You are centered to yourself and you do not care about what might be the affect towards other people. Some people would want Human Cloning to be implemented so they could clone themselves. A question popped into my mind, can you guarantee that your clone would have the same character or behavior as you had? Like Nicholas Coote said â€Å"If I have a clone of me, I am still unique as any clone has a consciousness that is not mine† and Shannon Brownies said â€Å"You could clone one hundred Hitler embryos and not get a single Hitler because he was shaped by his environment†.I think that this is suggesting that even though you will clone yourselves it will be impossible fo r you to create the exact same person because your clone would have to raised / exposed in the same environment and society as you, your clone should experience all of the things that you have experienced to make sure that he will be the same way as you. On the side of being ethical, people do not want human cloning to be implemented because it would cause conflict between the usual or normal way of creating life. Other Ethical groups were also worried about how the status of the family would be if cloning would be implemented.Some even suggest that cloning may lead to more harm than good. I personally think that with what people are doing with these days, they will tend to abuse the powers of cloning. It has been a bad habit for people to misuse things that are provided to them. I believe that for cloning to be successful people must understand how it works first and that they should make sure that there would be no information that they will not share or tell the public. Some of m y opinion may be impossible but it is because I believe that cloning may be used for good only if we are provided with the right information.
